I strive to forge meaningful connections between people and the landscapes they live in. I am committed to creating singular and enduring places that resonate deeply with my clients and enhance their lives, build on the natural assets of their site, and preserve and restore healthy ecological links with their surroundings and increase biodiversity.
Clients usually have very clear requirements of their landscape, yet many hint at stories, intangible desires, or memories of other places and interactions with nature that are not so easy to articulate. This requires listening.
Every site is unique. Site conditions include topography, solar orientation, soil composition, water systems, as well as existing plants, trees and wildlife. Broader influences include the history and style of the house and other structures, and the cultural characteristics of the neighborhood, town and bioregion. This requires observation and research.
A landscape is constantly evolving and subject to dynamic forces over which we seem to have little control. However, an appropriately designed and sustainable landscape, managed well, will prove resilient to inevitable changes: the growth of plants, the changing needs of a family, the vicissitudes of weather and a changing climate. This requires foresight, experience and flexibility.
Whether sensitively siting a new house, creating a network of walking trails and stone steps through wildlife-rich woodlands, enhancing and maintaining views, designing a stone terrace, or selecting pollinator-attracting plants for dry shade, I am dedicated to bringing people and nature together to the benefit of both.
